What are the applications for VIS spectroscopy?
There are increasingly diverse applications for spectroscopy, many in NIR and UV as well as VIS, or visible light. Torrent offers devices for each and can help to determine the right approach for your application.
VIS spectroscopy is most often used in color analysis. Spectrophotometers can be used for in-line detection for quality control in manufacturing, where light will couple into the spectrometer and give a reading. Applications can range from color analysis in printing to a wide range of consumer products.
More advanced applications, such as those used in food safety, are typically NIR spectrometry. Multispectral sensing, in visible and NIR wavelengths, is often a better fit for agricultural applications like crop monitoring and food quality testing, including ripeness and bruising, quality grading and sorting, and other non-invasive inspections.
What does spectrometer integration look like?

Is spectroscopy suited to my application?
Spectroscopy is point detection—measuring what you can get collimated and is used in a broad range of applications, with wavelength requirements a driving factor in selection.
Spectrometers are a subset of spectral devices, which include hyperspectral and multispectral cameras and other imaging solutions, for broader wavelength requirements or broader area detection.
How does the transmissive grating impact spectrometer performance?
Transmissive gratings, like the diffraction grating and UV CMOS detector in the Renegade, offer higher sensitivity compared to traditional reflective gratings used on most spectrometers on the market.
The higher sensitivity makes these spectrometers well-suited to semiconductor metrology and other stringent quality control applications. The fine patterning and deep etches of these transmissive gratings allow for increased sensitivity.

Transmissive gratings such as those designed and manufactured by Torrent are increasingly used in stress testing, to measure stress in real time, in optical coherence tomography (OCT), a non-invasive imaging technique that uses light waves to create cross-sectional images of the retina, and pathology detection, using UV, VIS, and fluorescence spectroscopy.
